Balcombe Viaduct played a key part in the development of West Sussex allowing the London to Brighton railway to span the River Ouse valley and o connect the Sussex coast to the capital.

It stretches for nearly 500 metres and was built in the early 1840s, with the work being completed in 1842. It is estimated that the viaduct contains around 11 million bricks.
