Chanctonbury Ring |
Grahame Stovold |
|
The trees that make up Chanctonbury Ring, which is a few miles north of Worthing, were planted originally in the mid eighteenth century, and they matured to provide a distinctive dome-shaped "cap" on the hill top. The trees were very badly damaged in the storm of October 1987, and attempts have been made to replant as shown in the picture. It is still possible to imagine the shape as it was before the storm. The trees stand on an ancient site, with the earliest being an Iron Age settlement. There are signs of a later Roman building, thought to be a temple. More about Chanctonbury Ring here. |
